Each year the VA releases Montgomery GI Bill payment rates and the news is often good. For example, for 2011, Montgomery GI Bill payment rates increased by 4 percent to $1,426 a month, making the total value of the older Montgomery GI Bill program $51K+ (for 36 months) for those who have not yet started using their Montgomery GI Bill benefit.
The Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB), a federal program that offers generous support for veterans' who want to pursue their educational goals. MGIB is available for those who enlist in the U.S. Armed Forces, and for Reserve and National Guard, both part-time service and tour of active duty, with either the Montgomery GI Bill-Active Duty (Chapter 30) or The Montgomery GI Bill-Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606).
If you qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB), you may receive benefits for a an undergraduate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university, an accredited independent study program leading to a degree, wide variety of training programs, and more. Your MGIB benefit is based on the educational program, your length of military service, and your category. In some circumstances, DOD may add money to your MGIB Fund (called "kickers"). You generally have 10 years to use your MGIB benefits.
To qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill, service members must contribute to the program from their military pay each month. Under Chapter 30, enrolled Active Duty members who pay $100 per month for 12 months are entitled to receive a monthly education benefit after completing a minimum service obligation. Under Chapter 1606, a reservist who is actively drilling and has a 6-year obligation in the Selected Reserve can qualify for the Montgomery GI Bill. Montgomery GI Bill benefits are adjusted each year according to changes in Consumer Price Index.
If you're eligible, your Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (MGIB-AD) benefits will provide up to 36 months of education benefits for an Undergraduate or Graduate Degree at a college or university; Cooperative training Accredited independent study program leading to a degree; Business courses; Technical courses; Vocational training; Correspondence courses; Apprenticeship; Job training; Flight training; High-tech Training; Licensing and certification tests; Entrepreneurship training; and qualified entrance examinations.

MGIB-SR may be available if you are a member of the Selected Reserve of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Guard Reserve, as well as Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. Use your MGIB-SR for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Even remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses approved under MGIB-SR.
